Mini Split + Heat Pump Installation in San Jose, CA

Heat Pump Installation mini split installation

FairPrice Heating & Cooling installed a ductless mini split system alongside a whole-home heat pump for a San Jose homeowner, delivering year-round heating and cooling with zoned comfort control and significantly lower energy use than the home’s aging gas-furnace-and-window-AC setup.

The Challenge

The homeowner was dealing with uneven temperatures — a converted bonus room and back bedroom that never stayed comfortable, while the main living areas were over-conditioned. The existing system relied on an aging gas furnace for heat and window units for cooling, which meant noisy operation, high summer electric bills, and no efficient way to condition the add-on spaces that had no ductwork. They wanted a single, modern, all-electric solution that would handle both heating and cooling without tearing up walls to run new ducts.

Our Solution

FairPrice performed a full in-home load calculation and designed a hybrid approach: a high-efficiency inverter heat pump to serve the main ducted areas of the home, paired with a ductless mini split to independently condition the bonus room and back bedroom. The mini split’s wall-mounted indoor heads gave each space its own thermostat and setpoint, eliminating the hot-and-cold fight between rooms. Installation included refrigerant line routing with minimal wall penetration, electrical upgrades to support the all-electric equipment, proper condensate drainage, commissioning and airflow balancing, and a walkthrough of the controls. FairPrice also handled permitting and inspection, and reviewed available utility and federal heat pump incentives with the homeowner.

FAQ

Can you install a mini split and a heat pump in the same home?

Yes. It’s a common and highly effective combination. A central heat pump handles the main ducted living areas while a ductless mini split conditions spaces the ducts don’t reach well — additions, converted garages, bonus rooms, or sunrooms. Both run on electricity and both heat and cool, so you get one consistent, all-electric comfort system with zone-level control.

Do I need ductwork for a mini split?

No. That’s the main advantage. A ductless mini split connects the outdoor unit to indoor wall or ceiling heads using a small refrigerant line set, requiring only a three-inch opening through the wall. It’s ideal for San Jose homes with additions or remodeled spaces where running new ducts would be invasive or impossible.

Will a heat pump keep my San Jose home warm in winter?

Yes. San Jose’s mild winter climate is nearly ideal for heat pumps. Modern inverter-driven units maintain full heating capacity well below the temperatures our area sees, and they deliver that heat far more efficiently than a gas furnace or electric resistance heating.

How long does a mini split and heat pump installation take?

Most combined installations are completed in one to three days depending on the number of indoor heads, electrical panel work required, and the condition of existing ductwork. FairPrice handles permitting and inspection as part of the project.

Are there rebates or tax credits for heat pumps and mini splits in California?

Qualifying high-efficiency heat pump systems may be eligible for California utility or electrification program incentives. Program amounts and eligibility change, so FairPrice reviews current options with you during the estimate.
